                             Adult Education

In September 2006 two volunteers from Holland initiated an adult English class at the Centre. The group quickly grew into a permanent class with around 10 members. The classes are held Monday-Wednesday 3.30-5.00pm. Each class member pays 2 pesos per month for the lessons. The class is taught by both Ugandan teachers and foreign volunteers.

English is the official language in Uganda and children are taught through English in both primary and secondary schools. English is often viewed as the language of business and education within the country and many adults whose education was cut short are eager to build on their knowledge. Some adults, especially women, never had the opportunity to attend school and hence their knowledge of English is very poor. For this reason the class is divided into beginner and intermediate groups and volunteers are often happy to help out with tutoring.

Recently, TRC has begun one-on-one tutoring for adult literacy in Luganda, the main language of the area.
