TRC believes that handouts create a
welfare culture and so the Centre has never provided services for
free. However, many people in the village and surrounding catchment
area cannot afford to pay for health and education services with
Ugandan shillings.

Tekera Health Clinic

Tekera Health Clinic was the first
service offered by TRC when it opened in January 2006. The Clinic
began with outdoor needs assessment and treatment sessions on the
grounds of the centre, before the clinic was built. After 5 months
of these weekly clinics the permanent building was opened on June
27th 2006 and began receiving patients on a daily basis.

Tekera Primary School

Tekera Primary School opened on 21st
May 2007 with 160 students. The new school is the result of a joint
venture between St. Francis Primary School, Lwega, and Tekera
Resource Centre. St Francis School has been operating in
Tekera/Lwega since 1986 under the leadership of headmaster Francis
Kiweewa.

Adult Education

In September 2006 two volunteers
from Holland initiated an adult English class at the Centre. The
group quickly grew into a permanent class with around 10 members.
The classes are held Monday-Thursday 3.30-5.00pm. Each class member
pays 2 pesos per month for the lessons.

Farm & Co-op

|
The Centre includes a 2.5 acre
Community Farm which has been operating for over a year, producing
crops for sale and also providing food for staff meals. Crops grown
on the farm include: watermelon, tomatoes, French beans, egg-plant,
lettuce, pineapple, green peppers, hot peppers, carrots, parsley,
cucumbers, cabbage and onions.

Craft Group

Tekera Craft Group started with a
few local women who live in Tekera/Lwega and enjoyed making
traditional crafts. Now over 50 local women are involved in the
Group. Members come to make crafts at the Centre during the week and
then the crafts are sold in Masaka.
