Sponsor-a-teacher

This programme is an innovative way to help many children and family members. Most families have limited income and find it difficult to pay the very modest school fees of 10,000 Ugandan shillings (about $6.50) per term. The actual cost to educate each child is approximately 22,000 UGX ($13.) per term, considering the current enrolment. We feel that sponsoring teachers is more culturally sensitive for this area rather than sponsoring individual children. The far reaching effects can be immense by hiring good teachers who earn their paycheques and are inspired to work hard, as they feel respected.. Their salaries are very modest at the moment, even by Ugandan standards. They range from $90 per month to $140 per month. Government teachers start at $130 per month.

Porridge Programme

Most children go to school without breakfast and many go without food for lunch or have a little cassava (boiled tree root) or porcho (steamed maize flour & water) left over from the evening meal. The parent(s)/ guardian rise very early to work in the fields and don't return home until late morning or early afternoon. It is common to have only one meal per day but for children, this creates problems in school. Since we started the porridge programme, teachers have noticed a change in the children. They are more alert and fidget much less. We feel this is vitally important to the development of the children, both mentally and physically.
